Preview of Week Beginning 10/24

This week, students will be working on an essay as the summative assessment for Unit 2: New Centers of Civilization. We will be working on this the entire week, and employing differentiation for the purpose of conferencing with students. This essay will be due next Monday. Progress reports will be finalized on Wednesday morning.

Preview of Week Beginning 10/16

This week, students will explore the achievements of the Golden Age of the Arab Empire. There will be a guided reading on the Arabs. Then, there will be direct instruction on the expansion and achievements of the Empire. Students will be asked to write a fictional letter to a Byzantine friend discussing the achievements of the Arab Empire. On Friday, students will complete a reading on Arab civilization in Egypt. There will be a learning extension on the great Arab explorer Ibn Battuta.

Week of Columbus Day

In World History 9 this week, students will create their standards portfolios for the end of the course. They will engage in a webquest on the Byzantine capitol of Constantinople. I will deliver direct instruction on the Technology of the Byzantines. Formative map assessments are due. A summative assessment will conclude the week.

Preview of Week Beginning 10/03

This week, we will end Unit I: Diverse Belief Systems and begin Unit II: New Centers of Culture. In this unit, we investigate the rise of the Byzantine and the Arab Empires in the Dark Ages, the two vehicles that preserved and advanced our Ancient Heritage in the worst years of the Middle Ages. Students should have Summative Assessment II done by Wednesday. There will be two formative assessments by the end of this week.
